WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center’s  Main entrance to close June 22 — Visitors Should Use Tavern Road Entrance

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (June 16, 2026)  –  WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center announced today that its main entrance will close June 22, as construction continues on the hospital’s new patient tower, a significant $200 million project designed to enhance patient care and expand services in the community.

During the closure, patients and visitors should access the hospital through the new North Entrance off Tavern Road, which will serve as the primary entrance for the duration of the project. Patients seeking care in the Emergency Department should continue to park and enter through the Emergency Department entrance. 

A press release from WVU Medicine East provided some of the benefits the hospital system says will come from the construction.

“The new patient tower marks an important milestone for Berkeley Medical Center,” said Chuck DiBello, vice president of operations at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center. “We are committed to ensuring a safe, clear and convenient experience for our patients during construction, with dedicated access for emergency care and full services available through our North Entrance.” 

Wayfinding signage will be installed throughout the campus and on surrounding roadways, and staff will be available to assist patients and visitors during the transition.  

“As we make progress, we want our community to feel confident that hospital services and emergency care will continue without interruption,” DiBello added. “Taking care of our patients always comes first.”

Transforming Care: Patient Tower Project 

The entrance relocation supports the hospital’s broader patient tower project focused on expanding and modernizing patient care spaces across the WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center campus. 

Project highlights include: 

• Increased inpatient capacity through the elimination of all semi-private rooms, enhancing patient privacy and comfort. 
• Replacement of the linear accelerator at the WVU Cancer Institute to support advanced cancer care and improved treatment capabilities. 
• Expanded and modernized facilities designed to meet the region’s growing health care needs and support future care advancements.

The new patient tower is expected to open in early 2028.
